Disease and Nutrient Discussion

Disease and Nutrient Discussion

****Because this is a much larger Discussion Board than usual, this counts as 2 Discussion Boards and is NOT available for bonus credits*****

This Discussion will be longer and take more time than most of our other discussion boards. Here, you will write about a nutrient and a disease associated with it. describing a disease state and its related nutrient from the list below.

Step 1: Choose one disease below. ONLY one of the diseases below.

Xerophthalmia             Rickets                            BeriBeri              Wernicke-Korsakoff                Pellagra

Spina Bifida                  Pernicious Anemia        Scurvy                Hemochromatosis (iron)

Goiter                            Zinc Deficiency             Fluorosis            Cretinism

Step 2: Research the following topics related to that disease as well as its associated nutrient. Remember, quality is more important than quantity. For some diseases, there will be less information to discuss, but more information on the related nutrient.

The following are a list of questions you should answer.

Disease:

What is this disease? How does it come about? Who is at risk? How does it affect an individual? How can it be treated/managed/prevented?

Nutrient:

Functions – What is the nutrient and why is it important in the body?

Sources – Describe the DRIs for this nutrient and what foods are good sources.

Deficiencies – what are some symptoms of a deficiency of this nutrient? Describe any disease states associated and who might be at risk of this?

Toxicities – what are some symptoms of a toxicity of this nutrient? Describe any disease states associated and who might be at risk of this? If there is no real toxicity, explain why that would be.

Metabolism/Bioavailability – What other nutrients might it affect the absorption, or might be affected by it? What conditions must exist for it to be absorbed?

Step 3: List the credible sources of information you used to answer the questions.

Acceptable sources include you textbook, most .gov and .org sites. Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source unless you are playing trivia games. But, you can use the Wikipedia site to help you find reliable sources.
