The first two questions relate to influencing a bill is traveling through the legislative process. The third question refers you to the social determinants of health as described in your course textbook reading and asks you to think specifically on your role as a nurse in influencing social determinants of health. In a brief paper (no more than 2 typed pages, 1 inch margins, 12 font Times New Roman or Courier New), answer the questions below. Write each question as a new topic area and then follow with a paragraph or two to answer the question. You may find it necessary to search for answers to the questions outside of the assigned reading. Be sure to use APA guidelines for writing style, spelling and grammar, and citation of sources. Answer the following questions: What parts of the lawmaking process does a nurse have an opportunity to influence the final bill passage? List at least two ways that this influence can take place. In your opinion, would one way be preferable over the other? Submission Details: Submit your response in a 2-page Microsoft Word document (500 words). Name your document SU_NSG4068_W2_Project_LastName_FirstInitial.doc. What parts of the lawmaking process does a nurse have an opportunity to influence the final bill passage?

The contemporary society facing multiple healthcare challenges that influence policy changes. In this case, nurses are aware of their advocacy roles in implementing changes in healthcare by engaging in particular parts of the law making process. Nurses have the opportunity to influence the passage of the final bill from the initialization of the process and before the introduction of the bill when they are called upon to offer advice, research and insights regarding the suggested idea. This supports collection of facts during this development stage. They can also influence the bill during the first step of making the bill a law whereby they know the members of committees handling the bill and give them their perceptions, ideas and views concerning the pending legislation.Nurse’s Role in Legislative Process

Consequently, the step two provides nurses with opportunities to have input in the bill progress through recorded views. This allows making of changes and amendments following the nurses’ recommendations. Notably, nurses can engage in policy making during step 5. This step involves making amendments and includes the opinions of the nurses, organizations and citizens (American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, 2020). Here, the nurse contacts the conference committee members through offering significant views relating to healthcare improvement. This is often the last opportunity to influence the outcome

List at least two ways that this influence can take place. In your opinion, would one way be preferable over the other?

Nurses’ policy influence describes the use of nurses’ ability to influence decisions and affairs related to health via collaboration, effective communication and political knowledge. This influence can occur through advocacy and lobbying whereby nurses enter into the legislative arena and meet with legislators and committee members to deliver their expert opinion about the laws being developed. Nursing advocacy involves defending the rights of the patient by speaking out against actions or policies that conflict their rights or endanger their wellbeing. Lobbying involves the communication of views on health issue to elected officials in an effective and timely manner. In this case, the nurses call, write, email or visit congressmen involved in the law-making process addressing the healthcare issues and communicate their views. This helps in the persuasion of the legislatures to pass specific healthcare bills, amend proposed legislations or undo already existing legislations.Nurse’s Role in Legislative Process

Reviewing the social determinants of health, select one to respond to this question:
What role can nurses play in promoting health status through policy changes directly affecting this social determinant?

Social determinants of health describe the conditions in which an individual was given birth, brought up, work and grows old in. the distribution of resources shapes the social determinants and nurses play a role in promoting health status in these conditions through advocacy for policy changes. One of the social determinants is health services and it characterizes the access and use of services that prevent and treat disease and their influence on health (Baker et al., 2018). The role of nurses in promoting healthcare related to health services includes advocating for universal access of care through engagement in the development of policies that support prevention of diseases. Moreover, they advocate for the reduction of healthcare costs and provision of compulsory insurance programs for the minorities that experience economic challenges that limit their access of better healthcare services.
