Stress is a part of our daily lives, but it does not have to cause us harm. By recognizing the biopsychosocial factors of stress, we can begin to lessen its impact. The body responds to stress through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol and norepinephrine. These chemicals may help give us a boost of energy when faced with a challenging situation, such as running away from a lion, but they also alter normal body processes and cause adverse side effects such as abdominal fat storage; cramps and headaches; elevated blood sugar; decreased bone density; irregular menstrual cycle; increased risk of heart attacks and strokes; chronic high blood pressure; increased blood clotting tendency; and tattooing or darkening of skin due to poor circulation…
Biopsychosocial stress is a phrase used to describe how psychological and physiological events can contribute to stress. It helps the physician understand the basis for physical illness, as well as mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety. Take depression for example. Depression results from the body’s inability to produce enough chemicals in its serotonin system. Folks with depression may find their mood somewhat flattened and experience change in eating patterns. An individual experiencing this may present with loss of appetite or with an increase in cravings for sweets. On one side of the coin, someone having biopsychosocial stress may have increased anxiety levels, which may be brought on by normal everyday pressure at work or home. These situations cause many individuals to experience physical tension and pain, irregular breathing, or palpitations.
