PCN-107: Introduction to Counseling Theories

This PCN-107: Introduction to Counseling Theories course covers the fundamentals of theoretical approaches to counseling. Psychodynamic, existential, Gestalt, person-centered, cognitive and behavioral therapy, family systems, and narrative- and solution-focused therapies are among the theoretical models investigated.

 

Sigmund Freud’s famous Wednesday night meetings at his Vienna home and John Pratt’s treatment of tuberculosis patients in group “classes” in the United States are the foundations of current group counseling theory and practice and from these early beginnings. Many theoretical approaches and applications have emerged to create an effective and empirically validated treatment in psychology today. Research methods improved and interest in studying group effectiveness grew and the emphasis shifted from proving that groups were more effective than no treatment at all. To proving that groups for specific populations and problems were as effective as or if not more effective than, other active treatments. The central question in the field shifted from “Are groups effective?” to “What kinds of groups are effective for what types of people with what problems?” as research, theory, and practice grows in the field.
