PCN-100: Foundations of Addiction and Substance Use Disorders

This PCN-100: Foundations of Addiction and Substance Use Disorders course covers the fundamentals of addiction and substance abuse disorders. Biopsychosocial dynamics, stages, processes, and consequences of addiction and substance use, and the role of the addiction professional in prevention, intervention, relapse prevention, and aftercare are just a few of the topics covered. In addition, the course covers the code of ethics for substance abuse counselors, HIPAA, and legal issues that arise during counseling.

People have been using drugs and alcohol to cope with trauma, stress, and other aspects of life for decades. Over 32 million Americans are addicted to drugs or alcohol, according to statistics. Substance abuse is defined as a disease in which a person regularly abuses a substance and is unaffected by the physical, financial, mental, or emotional harm their addiction causes them, their family, or anyone close to them. Since the days of ancient warriors who would get drunk to boost their courage and reduce their pain levels, humans have used substances like drugs and alcohol.

Substances that contain addictive chemicals are divided into several subcategories, and I’ll go over a few of them briefly. I’ll also touch on the symptoms of withdrawal that users experience after ingesting these and other potentially addictive drugs. In my essay, I’ll compare and contrast alcohol abuse, opioids, and stimulants to other drugs classified as “hard core drugs!” Alcohol is by far the most socially acceptable substance, and it is also the most abused substance in the world; in fact, it is known as “humanity’s domesticated drug.”

Because of its ability to attack the central nervous system, alcohol is a depressant. Excessive drinking over a long period of time can lead to serious cognitive and memory issues. It is responsible for nearly 95,000 deaths in the United States each year. Binge drinking, defined as a pregnant woman or a teen who consumes 4-5 or more drinks on a regular basis, is an example of excessive alcohol abuse.
