Data Manipulation Language (DML) is a set of programming instructions used to execute SQL statements. Data Definition Language (DDL) is a set of programming instructions used to create and modify databases, schemas, tables, indexes, columns and constraints. DDL statements can be used for normalization and in transaction log creation. DML statements are divided into two categories: data manipulation language (DML) and data definition language (DDL).
Data manipulation and definition language are two very different parts of SQL (structured query language). Data manipulation language is used to update, delete, or add data to a table in the database. Data definition language is used to create and modify the tables themselves. For example, you may use data manipulation to add a new patient to your database, but you do not need to define the table they are being added to.
A both Data Manipulation Language (DML) and Data Definition Language (DDL) are essential tools in creating and manipulating databases. Data Manipulation Language describes how the data is acted on in a programming language while Data Definition Language refers to how the data is categorized and stored. Together, these two languages have been developed to make it easier for bioinformatics professionals to coordinate large amounts of biological data for research purposes. The most famous language for DML known as Structured Query Language (SQL) has been developed by IBM. It plays an important role in relational database management systems (RDBMS).

Common DML statements include SELECT (to fetch data from the database), UPDATE (to change existing data in the database), INSERT (to add new data to the database), and DELETE (to remove an entry from the database).
