Nurses support and enable individuals, families and groups to maintain, restore or improve their health status. Nurse also care for and comfort when deterioration of health has become irreversible. A traditional ideal of nursing is caring and nurturing of human beings regardless of race, religion, status, age, gender, diagnosis, or any other grounds. A code of ethics focuses on the morals and ideals of the profession and provides a working framework for nursing practice. This essay discusses the ethical issues faced by a nurse in a scenario where a young girl is admitted to a hospital with abdominal pain. The girl discloses to the nurse that she is pregnant, but asks her not to tell her mother. Further, the nurse’s friend, another Registered Nurse, who is familiar with the case, discusses and speculates about it on social media. Based on the details of the case and study of the relevant literature, ethical and legal issues related to disclosure of patient’s confidential and private information are identified. Further, there are ethical issues related to termination of pregnancy. The case is also discussed from the perspective of possible child abuse. The nurse needs to consider the necessity of disclosure and the propriety of the decisions (e.g. termination of pregnancy) at each stage of the decision making process, always keeping the interest of the patient in mind. Ethics is a concept about right and wrong in the context of the decisions and actions of people.
