Although innovation has the potential to enhance outcomes and make care more sustainable, it is not always straightforward to put into practice. It is necessary for the organizational culture to be prepared for it, which means that the organization’s leaders must also be prepared. They must foster an environment that encourages innovation if they want to see improvements in their outcomes and long-term viability. Nothing will change until they work jointly toward that goal—and they will not perceive any improvement on their own.
That makes obvious if you think about it: you wouldn’t expect your automobile to get greater gas mileage simply by putting in some high-quality fuel. You’d also have to inspect and maintain your tires on a regular basis.
